Manoa Farm is located in a region facing some of the highest deforestation pressure in the world. Since 2017, most of the land surrounding the farm has been losing forest to accomodate agricultural activities – notably for cattle and soybean farming. Manoa Farm is an exception and has remained virtually unchanged over the years, showcasing a worldwide example of what sustainable forest management can look like.

Being one of the last remaining old growth forests in the region, Manoa Farm has become a refuge for more than 780 species of animals that have fled deforestation in the neighbouring properties. The farm is also home to 115 protected species of plants, 16 of which are critically endangered.

The project is a 7-time winner in the annual Environmental Finance Voluntary Carbon Market Rankings awards, and is also one of the highest-rated projects evaluated by Renoster.

What is REDD+?

REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) projects focus on conserving and restoring forests to reduce CO2 emissions and protect biodiversity. These projects engage local communities, governments, and NGOs in sustainable forest management practices, which help prevent deforestation and degradation, support ecosystem resilience, and promote long-term climate benefits. REDD+ projects deliver verified emissions reductions while empowering communities with economic incentives for conservation.

Socioeconomic Impact

Environmental education is one of the main activities of the Manoa REDD+ Project, offered to students of the city of Cujubim (Rondônia State) and workers of the Farm, with the purpose of disseminating the best practices of use and conservation of forests and to raise awareness to the local population, especially the youth. With that in mind, the Manoa Forest Education Center (“CEFLOM”) was built, where students and workers of the region receive information and guidelines so that, together, they may bring knowledge about the conservation of the Amazon Rain Forest.

Environmental Impact

The project supports local biodiversity and ecosystem services through FSC-certified low-impact forest management, promoting sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems. It also advances biodiversity knowledge via fauna monitoring with UNIR and sustainable flora activities on the farm. The project aims to reduce emissions, with the potential to cut 8,378,700 tCO2e of greenhouse gases over 30 years.

REDD+ projects have faced criticism in the past — often relating to issues such as lack of transparency and integrity. In spite of this, Senken recognises the substantial role that avoided deforestation initiatives play in mitigating climate change. Old-growth forests serve as effective long-term carbon storage solutions, having sequestered vast amounts of carbon over millennia. In addition to this, preserving these ancient forests, which support intricate ecosystems, protects critical biodiversity hotspots developed over millions of years while enhancing ecosystem resilience. These habitats are essential for countless species, contributing to global genetic diversity.

Senken has chosen to partner with Manoa because of its rigorous reporting on both carbon and additional environmental impacts. For instance, Manoa has documented over 787 wildlife species in its project area, with 22 currently threatened with extinction. Manoa has been recognised for its impact and has been awarded with the Gold Label for Biodiversity from CCBS.

The project has been carefully selected as it additionally has a significant impact on local livelihoods through environmental education by developing an environmental education centre (CEFLOM), where students and local communities can learn about forest conservation and environmental stewardship.
