Indigo Carbon is intended to promote a range of agricultural management practice changes targeted at increasing soil organic carbon (SOC) storage and reducing net emissions of CO2, CH4, and N2O from farms. Indigo Ag helps farmers to implement climate-smart practices through an integrated system of extension and outreach, modeling, agronomy support, and digital data collection tools. Practice changes target fertilizer use, tillage, crop rotations, cover cropping, and livestock management. Beyond climate benefits, Indigo Carbon increases farm resilience to weather and climate change, promotes diversity of the soil microbiome, and increases rural incomes.

What is Regenerative Agriculture?

Regenerative agriculture is a farming method that focuses on restoring and enhancing soil health by using practices like planting diverse crops together and reducing soil disturbance, such as heavy tilling. This approach helps the soil become richer in microbes, which in turn makes it more effective at capturing and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. By increasing biodiversity and fostering a healthy ecosystem in the soil, regenerative agriculture not only supports better crop yields but also contributes to long-term carbon storage, making the soil more "hungry" for CO2.

This method is gaining significant support from both scientific communities and major companies. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has recognised regenerative agriculture as an important practice for enhancing soil carbon storage and mitigating climate change. Companies like Unilever, Boston Consulting Group, and IBM have invested in regenerative agriculture initiatives, demonstrating strong corporate support for this sustainable farming practice.

Socioeconomic Impact

Indigo Ag’s regenerative agriculture program empowers farmers to transition from conventional practices to soil health–focused methods that generate verified carbon credits. By adopting techniques like cover cropping and reduced tillage, farmers unlock new income streams, reduce input costs, and improve long-term land productivity. The program strengthens rural economies, supports skilled agricultural jobs, and fosters financial resilience, ensuring that climate action directly benefits the communities stewarding the land.

Environmental Impact

Indigo Ag’s regenerative agriculture program enhances soil health by increasing organic carbon storage, improving water retention, and reducing erosion. Practices such as cover cropping, diverse crop rotations, and reduced tillage boost biodiversity both above and below ground, while lowering greenhouse gas emissions from conventional farming. Over time, these changes create more resilient agricultural ecosystems that support long-term climate mitigation and nature conservation.

Senken's Take

Indigo Ag’s regenerative agriculture program offers a high-integrity pathway to carbon removal while delivering tangible benefits for farming communities. By guiding farmers to adopt proven soil health practices such as cover cropping, diverse rotations, and reduced tillage, it sequesters carbon in soils, enhances biodiversity, and builds climate resilience across agricultural landscapes. Verified under the Climate Action Reserve’s Soil Enrichment Protocol, the program ensures transparency, additionality, and measurable results. For companies seeking credible, nature-based credits with strong co-benefits, Indigo Ag stands out as a scalable, future-proof solution linking climate action directly to the people managing our land.
