Million Tonnes Offset
TIST encourages Small Groups of subsistence farmers to improve their local environment and farms by planting and maintaining trees on degraded and/or unused land.

Over 260,355 farmers in 4 countries have successfully planted more than 27,461,071 trees and captured over 7,001,024 metric tons of carbon dioxide to date.

As the trees grow, carbon captured is quantified and verified and certified greenhouse gas credits are sold in the global carbon market.

TIST Farmers receive annual carbon pre-payments for each tree established and 70% of the net profit when credits are sold.

Smallholder farmers also derive significant non-carbon related benefits verified to exceed $8 per tree. Trees provide fruit, fodder, fuel, windbreaks, shade and stabilize riverbanks plus participants have access to health information and training and safe cooking stoves.

What is Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation (ARR)?

ARR is a method of restoring forest cover in areas that have been deforested or degraded, as well as planting trees in regions that have not been previously forested. This approach involves planting native and resilient tree species to sequester CO2 from the atmosphere while supporting biodiversity and improving ecosystem health.

In addition to capturing CO2, ARR projects provide critical environmental benefits, such as enhancing water cycles, preventing soil erosion, and creating habitats for wildlife. These projects also have socio-economic advantages, offering employment opportunities and sustainable resources for local communities.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has identified reforestation as a crucial tool for carbon sequestration. Global support is growing, with companies and organisations recognising ARR as an effective and scalable solution for addressing climate change.

Socioeconomic Impact

TIST empowers 300,000 smallholder farmers with sustainable income and food security. Farmers earn direct payments per tree and share in carbon revenue, while also benefiting from increased crop yields, new sources of food and fuel, and improved soil health through Conservation Farming. TIST also provides health and business education, supporting long-term wellbeing and economic resilience in vulnerable rural communities.

Environmental Impact

TIST combats climate change by planting trees, improving soil health, and sequestering carbon in measurable ways. The program reduces reliance on fossil fuels through sustainable practices like fuel-efficient stoves, solar energy, and natural farming methods. By partnering with local communities, TIST creates practical, grassroots solutions that address both global climate goals and everyday challenges faced by vulnerable populations.

Senken's Take

Climate action must be inclusive to be truly effective, and TIST proves just how powerful local action can be. By mobilizing 300,000 smallholder farmers across Africa, this project restores degraded land, captures carbon at scale, and delivers real, measurable socioeconomic benefits.

TIST’s model is both simple and revolutionary: empower farmers to plant and maintain trees on unused land, verify the carbon they sequester, and return the majority of profits from carbon credit sales back to the farmers. This creates long-term climate impact while simultaneously generating income, food security, and resilience for some of the world’s most vulnerable communities.

With over 27 million trees planted and 7 million tons of CO₂ captured, the project’s track record speaks for itself. Beyond carbon, the benefits are even more profound: improved soil health, increased yields, access to clean energy and health education — all contributing to the full range of Sustainable Development Goals.

By linking grassroots action with global climate finance, TIST redefines what equitable, high-integrity carbon projects can look like. This is climate justice in practice — and a blueprint for climate solutions that uplift both people and planet.
