Converting regional wood into electricity, heat, gas and biochar
Bioenergie Grauel is located in Mayen, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany (50.3149664, 7.2473707). This high-integrity carbon removal project converts regional wood residues into electricity, heat, gas, and biochar using a Syncraft reverse power plant. Over its first five years, the plant is expected to process approximately 14,750 tonnes of dry feedstock and produce around 3,000 tonnes of EBC-grade biochar, establishing an estimated 9,350 tCO2 of carbon-sink potential, of which about 7,012 tCO2 is permanent and about 2,338 tCO2 is temporary under the PAC and SPC categories. The project locks carbon in stable biochar incorporated into soils and materials and supplies renewable heat and power to the local area. The project is highly replicable and can be scaled to other wood-residue regions in Germany.
Removes 3.2 tCO2e per tonne of biochar with 86.6% carbon content and very low process emissions, though annual scale is modest at ~1,500 tonnes.
Biochar locks carbon for centuries to millennia with near-zero reversal risk, making it one of the most durable carbon removal methods available.
Generates clean electricity and heat for local use whilst improving soil health through biochar application, with meaningful environmental co-benefits in a developed-market context.
Carbon finance is essential to justify the significant capital investment in gasification technology, with no regulatory mandate for biochar production in Germany.
