As part of the project, the previously drained and extensively used polder are rewetted. The operation of the pumping station is restricted, a dam cascade is built and ditches are restored.

The new peatland restoration method is being tested for the first time in this project. This means that the reduction in emissions is documented annually by measuring the water levels and CO2 certificates are only issued after verification of the climate protection performance (ex post).

Based on the Greenhouse Gas Emission Site Types approach (GEST), an emission reduction of approx. 550 t CO2-eq. per year is expected compared to the reference scenario. Over the initial project term of 16 years, approx. 8,800 t CO2 eq. can be avoided by 2040.

What is Peatland Restoration?


Peatland restoration is a carbon avoidance method that focuses on preventing the release of CO2 stored in peat. When peatlands are drained or damaged, they release significant amounts of carbon into the atmosphere. Restoring these wetlands by re-wetting them keeps the carbon locked in the soil.

Emissions from drained peatlands are estimated at 5% of global anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, a disproportionate amount considering damaged peatlands cover just 0.3% of landmass.

Socioeconomic Impact

The annual payments to landowners for their climate protection contributions provide additional income and increase acceptance of peatland climate protection. The project area remains in the ownership of the previous landowners, and the land manager is supported in finding alternative uses for the biomass, with the aim of preserving both regional economic value and local jobs.

Environmental Impact

The higher water levels lead to a reduction in the mineralization of the peat body, which reduces the release of nutrients. As a result of the leaching of the area, sedges are expected to spread. In addition to the climate protection effect, the project has a buffering effect on the landscape water balance. The long-term goal is the renaturation of the entire valley moor complex of the Teterower Peene by remeandering and restoring the natural bed height of the Teterower Peene.

Aeco is a leading developer in the voluntary carbon market (VCM), committed not only to avoiding CO2 emissions release, but also to restoring Germany’s historic landscapes and biodiversity. Infact, Northern German peatlands, once rich and diverse, were essential breeding and feeding grounds for numerous bird species, including rare and endangered ones, as well as key stopover sites for migratory species.

Today less than 5% of Germany’s original peatlands remain, having been drained over centuries for agriculture and forestry. This degradation has led to peatlands contributing approximately 7.5% of Germany’s total greenhouse gas emissions, highlighting the urgent need for peatland restoration.

Aeco plays a key role in peatland restoration, actively restoring ecosystems and avoiding excessive amounts of CO2 to be realised back in to the atmosphere, contributing to Germany's environmental and climate mitigation strategy.
