Novocarbo removes CO2 from the atmosphere through biochar carbon removal. Using cutting-edge pyrolysis technology, the project converts biomass and waste residues into biochar — a stable form of carbon that can sequester CO2 for over 1,000 years.

The company's contribution to a greener economy is built on three pillars: carbon dioxide removal (CDR), the regenerative energy (green heat) produced during the process, and the sustainable benefits of biochar in soil and industrial applications. With extensive experience in pyrolysis, biochar production, and application, Novocarbo has a proven record of ensuring the permanence and safety of carbon sinks. The project is now ready to expand its operations internationally.

What is Biochar?

Biochar is a carbon removal method where organic materials like wood or crop waste are heated in a low-oxygen environment to create a stable form of carbon called biochar. This process, known as pyrolysis, turns the carbon into a solid that can be buried in soil. Once in the soil, biochar can trap carbon for hundreds to thousands of years, helping to reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.

Beyond carbon removal, the biochar process also addresses waste management and enhances soil fertility, leading to improved agricultural productivity.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has recognised biochar as a viable carbon removal method. Similarly, the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) has demonstrated biochar's significant potential in both carbon sequestration and soil health improvement.

Socioeconomic Impact

Novocarbo’s carbon removal projects create local jobs and support economic growth by employing community workforces and sourcing biomass regionally. Surplus heat from its sites is supplied to industrial partners, helping green industrial areas, particularly in underdeveloped regions. Novocarbo also engages communities through initiatives like biochar-based gardens with schools, promoting sustainability and education. Future projects will continue to involve local businesses and communities, fostering both economic and environmental benefits.

Environmental Impact

Novocarbo addresses key environmental challenges through its innovative solutions. Its Green-Energy-As-A-Service model generates surplus regenerative energy from the pyrolysis process, supplying heat, steam, and electricity to local grids and industrial partners. By 2030, Novocarbo aims to remove one megatonne of CO2, scaling to one gigatonne by 2040, helping meet critical climate targets. Additionally, biochar produced in the process supports regenerative agriculture by improving soil biodiversity, restoring ecosystems, and enhancing crop yields, contributing to a more sustainable agricultural system.

Senken's Take

Novocarbo is at the forefront of the global biochar supply, operating from its base in Dorth, Germany.

Through a key partnership with pyrolysis technology provider PYREG, Novocarbo uses state-of-the-art technology to produce stable biochar, ensuring long-term durability and offering low-risk Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) credits. The company sources its feedstock exclusively from certified regional PFEC biomass suppliers, using ligneous waste and agricultural residues to guarantee sustainable practices.

Since 2018, Novocarbo has leveraged one of Europe’s largest distribution networks to apply its biochar in agricultural soil and blue-green infrastructure projects, such as sponge city solutions in Scandinavia. In addition, Novocarbo is pushing the boundaries of biochar use by developing composite materials that incorporate biochar as a sustainable carbon alternative for large-scale industrial applications.

Partnering with Novocarbo means collaborating with a global leader in biochar production and an innovator in sustainable material development.
