Annual tonnes planned by 2031The company's contribution to a greener economy is built on three pillars: carbon dioxide removal (CDR), the regenerative energy (green heat) produced during the process, and the sustainable benefits of biochar in soil and industrial applications. With extensive experience in pyrolysis, biochar production, and application, Novocarbo has a proven record of ensuring the permanence and safety of carbon sinks. The project is now ready to expand its operations internationally.
What is Biochar?
Beyond carbon removal, the biochar process also addresses waste management and enhances soil fertility, leading to improved agricultural productivity.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has recognised biochar as a viable carbon removal method. Similarly, the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) has demonstrated biochar's significant potential in both carbon sequestration and soil health improvement.
Research
Role of biochar in carbon sequestration
Biochar in soil sequesters carbon and mitigates greenhouse gases, aiding climate change mitigation.Biochar as a viable carbon sequestration option
Biochar production and soil mixing offer carbon sequestration benefits; biomass and soil availability support viability.Project Certifications and Claims
The facility has successfully passed audit and continues its removal operations, as well as monitoring and reporting to Puro.
The Carbon Standards International has verified the biochar carbon removal, ensuring a 100-year permanence for carbon storage.
The project is recognised as one of the highest quality projects rated by BeZero, scoring in the top 9% of all projects.
Biochar is a nature-based carbon removal method that stores carbon for over 1000 years, making it suitable to count towards a net zero claim.
Novocarbo's vetted biochar project meets VCMI standards and is eligible for Carbon Integrity claims.
Due Diligence
Senken conducts a strict due diligence process to select and onboard project developers, ensuring that only carbon credits of the highest quality make it to our customers' portfolios.

Senken's Take
Through a key partnership with pyrolysis technology provider PYREG, Novocarbo uses state-of-the-art technology to produce stable biochar, ensuring long-term durability and offering low-risk Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) credits. The company sources its feedstock exclusively from certified regional PFEC biomass suppliers, using ligneous waste and agricultural residues to guarantee sustainable practices.
Since 2018, Novocarbo has leveraged one of Europe’s largest distribution networks to apply its biochar in agricultural soil and blue-green infrastructure projects, such as sponge city solutions in Scandinavia. In addition, Novocarbo is pushing the boundaries of biochar use by developing composite materials that incorporate biochar as a sustainable carbon alternative for large-scale industrial applications.
Partnering with Novocarbo means collaborating with a global leader in biochar production and an innovator in sustainable material development.
