Years of carbon sequestration
ZeroEx is the largest Enhanced Rock Weathering project in Germany. It stores massive amounts of carbon dioxide and sequesters it for over 10,000 years, while increasing agricultural yields in the process.

This project takes rock weathering—a natural carbon capture process that lasts for thousands of years—and uses scientific methods to speed it up. This is achieved by applying finely crushed silicate rocks on agricultural land, allowing it to react with CO2 and water, naturally capturing CO2.

ZeroEx uses this process to capture up to 72,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. Their market-leading, high-permanence CO2 storage generates some of the highest quality carbon credits available today. In addition to this, their projects also deliver several co-benefits. The application of rock powder on agricultural land enhances soil fertility and increases resistance to pests and diseases, improving soil health and crop yields. ZeroEx utilises advanced technology at their core to ensure quality and independent verifiability of their carbon credits.

What is Enhanced Rock Weathering?

Enhanced rock weathering is a carbon removal method that involves spreading crushed rocks over farmland. When rainwater, which naturally absorbs CO2 from the air, comes into contact with these rocks, a chemical reaction occurs that turns the CO2 into stable minerals. These minerals then lock away the carbon for thousands of years, effectively reducing CO2 levels in the atmosphere.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has recognised enhanced weathering as an effective carbon removal method. Major companies like Stripe, Shopify, and Microsoft have invested in enhanced weathering projects, demonstrating strong support for its potential in combating climate change.

Socioeconomic Impact

ZeroEx's projects increase food production by providing additional nutrients to agricultural soils, which enables farmers to secure additional income through their cooperation with ZeroEx. Germany accounts for 9% of the global market volume for environmentally and resource-efficient technology.

Environmental Impact

ZeroEx’s projects offer several benefits for biodiversity, particularly through their positive impacts on soil health and marine ecosystems. The water runoff from treated soils flows into rivers and eventually reaches the oceans, significantly improving ocean pH levels and counteracting ocean acidification.
